The foundation of friendship is the ability to feel and relate to others, in other words empathy. Learning how to make friends is a social skill we develop. YES, you heard right. We are not born with these skills. So how can we teach kids about friendship? Check out this week’s “1 minute Peppy Talks” for inspiration.
Exercise: Talk about who our friends are. At kindergarten, school, neighbors etc. Have the kids talk freely about what makes them good friends.
Ask: How do we know we are friends?
- How does it feel to be friends?
- What qualities does a good friend possess?
- Why do friends sometimes let us down?
- How does that feel?
- Can you have different kinds of friends?
Purpose: To talk about and express friendship.
Want to experience more? Seeing how friends behave in cartoons, games or books are good ways for kids to learn about friendship. While playing or reading together, try and ask questions to help your child reflect over what is going on. It is often easier for kids to relate to things when it is explained in third person.
