FAQ

About Peppy Pals

What is Peppy Pals?

Peppy Pals is a series of award-winning, research-based games, e-books, movies and activities designed to teach all children 2-9 years old about Social and Emotional Intelligence through storytelling and humor. In combination with inspirational conversation starters and playful activities, we bridge the gap between children and adults and make it fun and easy to practice EQ together.

Why is it called Peppy Pals?

Peppy Pals means ”encouraging friends” and characterizes the relationship between the friends in Peppy Pals.

Why should I use Peppy Pals?

Sometimes it’s not enough to tell children that “it’s important to be empathetic”, as they may not understand exactly what this means. For adults, many social rules and attitudes discussed in Peppy Pals, such as being a supportive friend or sharing, feel quite obvious. This is because adults have a “backpack” filled with experience and knowledge. Children don’t, and so everything may not be as obvious to them. Through our play-based learning concept, children learn why empathy, emotions, and other social skills are important and how they can use that knowledge in real life.

How can I get involved in Peppy Pals?

We appreciate all the help we can get to make sure every child grows up in a world filled with kindness and empathy. It ranges from just spreading the word about Peppy Pals to more families, schools, and after-school programs, to working as a volunteer, joining our monthly act of kindness or contribute with donations. Together, we can make sure that EQ is regarded as just as important as IQ

Even though your preschool/school might be working with other SEL/EQ-programs in the classroom, it’s good to be inspired to work with EQ in different ways. It benefits everyone in the long run.

About Social and Emotional Intelligence (EQ)

What is Social and Emotional Intelligence (EQ/SEL)?

Emotional Intelligence, or EQ, is an abbreviation of ”Emotional Quotient.” It is a measure of a person’s ability to deal with one’s own and others’ feelings, develop healthy relationships, motivate oneself, deal with adversities and challenges, and to be empathetic. EQ stands for the emotional quotient, compared to IQ, which describes our intelligence quotient.

In international contexts, Social and Emotional Intelligence, or Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), often involves skills such as: communication, conflict management, empathy, problem solving, cooperation and respect for others. The term is commonly used in the school environment.

Who introduced EQ to the world?

The term EQ was coined by psychologists John Mayer and Peter Salovey in the 1990s. A few years later, psychologist Daniel Goleman, Ph.D, published the book “Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ” which concretized the term EQ and made it more widely known to the public.

What areas of EQ does Peppy Pals work with?

At Peppy Pals, we work with the entire spectra of Social and Emotional Intelligence. We follow a model developed by the American research-based organization CASEL in combination with EQ psychologist Bodil Wennberg’s knowledge.

Here is an overview of the areas of expertise included in one or more Peppy Pals scenarios. We also work closely with the global EQ Network 6Seconds and Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.

Where can I find the latest research about EQ?

There are several leading institutes and organizations studying EQ in everything from leadership, education, psychology to our overall well-being. CASEL, Six Seconds, Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence are just a few examples. World Economic Forum and Harvard Business Review also release regular reports and articles on EQ.

Why is it important to teach children EQ?

Just like math or language, EQ is something we need to practice from early age and throughout life. Our Social and Emotional Intelligence is crucial for managing social, emotional, academic and professional situations in the future. Research also shows that EQ is one of the most important success factors and a cornerstone for our wellbeing. It affects as much as 85% of our future success and prosperity.

EQ also helps children to express and handle their feelings, manage challenges, not give up too early, ask for help and manage stress and anxiety.

Can I improve my EQ as an adult?

Yes, unlike IQ, EQ is dynamic and something we can practice throughout our lives. For example, you can improve your EQ by “checking in” with your feelings and reflecting on how you feel daily, thus gaining greater self-awareness.

Can EQ be measured?

Everyone has a certain level of EQ, but it is not as easy to measure in numbers as IQ. For adults there are a variety of EQ tests, but in order to make a conclusion, you often need to sit down with a professional interpreter or psychologist. The reason is that the test is often a self-assessment of an individual’s own image of himself/herself, and to avoid misinterpretations one needs to dig deeper and understand the answers behind the results in a feedback dialogue.

How can I test my child’s/my students’ EQ-level?

Children’s EQ is constantly evolving. Empathy, for example, is something that children begin to develop around the age of four. Hence, EQ is extra difficult to measure, especially for children as individuals. Moreover, the studies that have measured children’s EQ are done over extended periods and based on an adult’s perception of the child’s EQ. Six Seconds and CASEL are examples of organizations using different research methods to measure children’s EQ.
